I've received a lot of positive feedback regarding the world map of mastodon users, and also a lot of questions! :blush:
Instances countries are deduced from the instance IP, meaning japanese users residing on an instance hosted by a french provider would be marked as french.
At the moment, I see no other way to get instances countries. If you have any idea, question or feedback, please open an issue at https://github.com/EliotBerriot/mnm/issues or contact me here :)
@crecca I suspect one or many instances were removed from the list available at https://instances.mastodon.xyz/list, which is used as data source for my graphs.
I'll try to investigate this week-end.
@crecca @eliotberriot The instance mstdn.jp with more than 40000 users had a problem and was reset today, with everything on it lost. It now only has around 1000 user.

@eliotberriot is there a way to change instances? E.g if one fails@or if one simply wants to use a local one?...
@liebelur I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand your question.
Data is fetched regularly:
- instances list and data every 5 minutes
- instances countries by little batches to avoid being throttled by the freegeoip API (this data change rarely so it should not be a big deal)
If an instance is not included in https://instances.mastodon.xyz, it won't be included at all in the graphs.
@eliotberriot i meant the instance as an entry point. I am using an instance in france far away but found a "local super powerful one close by"... and want to switch... second reason: if one instance fails , because it was shut down by friendly regulators ;-)... how would@i automatically switch?
@liebelur At the moment, I don't think there is any built-in mechanism to easily switch an account from on instance to another, maybe you can ask directly on Mastodon Github repository for such a feature?
I'm pretty sure there are ongoing debates regarding account migration accross instances.
@eliotberriot j'ai vu que tu utilisais freegeoip API pour connaître le pays des instances, sauf que ce services et tout ceux qui te propose de connaître le pays d'origine d'une adresse IP peuvent te répondre dès informations erronées si le serveur est protège par cloudflare,qui, en autre masque l'adresse IP réel du serveur qu'il protège. je te conseille de regarder au niveaux du site crimeflare qui permet de retrouver l'IP originel.
@eliotberriot I wonder what rhe reason of sudden drop in users is. Did one of #instances crashed?
